MADDALENA DI CANOSSA: “A considerare la vita di Maddalena di Canossa, si direbbe che la carità come una febbre l’abbia divorata: la carità verso Dio, spinta fino alle vette più alte dell’esperienza mistica; la carità verso il prossimo, portata fino alle estreme conseguenze del dono di sé agli altri. Santa Maddalena amò appassionatamente Cristo crocifisso, senza tuttavia “distogliere gli occhi da quelli della sua carne” (cf. Is 58, 7). Aveva capito che la pietà vera, che commuove il cuore di Dio, consiste nello “sciogliere le catene inique, togliere i legami del giogo, rimandare liberi gli oppressi e spezzare ogni giogo” (cf. Is 58, 6).
Per questo si impegnò con ogni sua energia, oltre che con tutte le sue sostanze, per venire incontro ad ogni forma di povertà: quella economica non meno di quella morale, quella della malattia non meno che quella dell’ignoranza. Ecco, dunque, questa giovane donna che, spinta da un amore tenero insieme e forte, assiste i malati in casa e all’ospedale associandosi alla “Fratellanza Ospedaliera”, procura catechismi e predicazioni per le chiese, promuove il culto eucaristico nelle parrocchie, avvia i ritiri spirituali per il clero, aiuta numerosissime famiglie bisognose, assiste ragazzi abbandonati e giovani carcerati, sostenta i poveri che bussano tutti i giorni a palazzo, e visita coloro che vivono nelle catapecchie e nei tuguri”. MADDALENA DI CANOSSA: “To consider the life of Magdalene of Canossa, one would say that charity is like a fever that devoured her: charity towards God, pushed to the highest peaks of mystical experience; charity towards one’s neighbor, carried to the extreme consequences of the gift of self to others. St. Magdalene passionately loved Christ crucified, without however “taking her eyes off those of his flesh” (Cfr. Is 58:7). She understood that true piety, which moves the heart of God, consists in “untying the chains of iniquity, removing the bonds of the yoke, setting the oppressed free and breaking every yoke” (Cfr. Is 58:6).
For this she worked with all her energy, as well as all her possessions, to meet every form of poverty: the economic poverty no less than the moral poverty, the disease no less than that of ignorance. Here, then, this young woman, driven by a strong and tender love together, assists the sick at home and in the hospital, involving herself with the ‘Hospitaller Fraternity’, engage in catechisms and preaching for the churches the practice of Eucharistic adoration in parishes, retreats for the clergy, help many families in need, assist abandoned children and young prisoners, provide for the poor who knocked at the palace every day, and visit those who live in shacks and hovels.” – St. John Paul II
