As Jesus travels through Galilee, he is followed by an immense crowd. He stops and takes a moment to speak with them, proclaiming the Beatitudes. That message, which is Good News, transcends every age and is the definitive map for walking behind Jesus, towards holiness.
In it, the Lord reminds us of our first and deepest calling: we were created by God for happiness. This is not, however, a fleeting joy, but a lasting happiness, which finds its firm rock in God and remains unshaken even in the greatest trials. God patiently awaits each one of us, so that through our lives we may join the multitude of saints who already enjoy eternal glory.
For us, the Canossian Family, this Solemnity takes on an even more living force when read in the light of the words that kindled the heart of Saint Magdalene of Canossa: “Look and act according to the model.” Contemplating Christ on the Cross, our Model, in the light of the Beatitudes, we discover that holiness is not an unattainable ideal, but a concrete path that we walk in charity and humility.
To be saints today, in Magdalene’s style, means looking to the Crucified as our model in order to embody his love for the smallest and most vulnerable.
