Jesus finds Himself facing a clever trap, designed to force Him to take a political stance. But instead of being drawn into their opposition, He completely shifts the perspective with His famous reply: “Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God.”
Jesus acknowledges our civic duties, such as paying taxes and taking part in the life of society, represented by Caesar’s coin. However, while the coin bears Caesar’s image, we, the children of God, bear the image and likeness of the Lord.
In other words, we may give material goods to political authorities and fulfil our civic obligations, but our hearts, our souls and our ultimate devotion belong to God alone.
Living faithfully means taking on our daily responsibilities with commitment, never forgetting whom we truly belong to: Almighty God.
