In the Province of St Joseph in Timor-Leste, the Junior Sisters recently experienced an intense period of formation and deepening of their vocational journey. Seventeen young religious gathered to share days rich in reflection, study, and fraternal life.

The gathering offered a meaningful opportunity to strengthen their vocation and to reflect more deeply on the Canossian mission, in an atmosphere marked by attentive listening, prayer, and discernment. Through moments of dialogue and formation, the participants were able to renew their commitment to live the charism of Saint Magdalene of Canossa, allowing themselves to be guided by the Holy Spirit in their mission at the service of the poorest.

One of the central moments of the programme was the reflection on the letter of the Mother General, Sandra Maggiolo, entitled “Enkindled by the Spirit, Sent in Mission.” The session, led by Sr Helena Branca Boavida, helped the young religious to reflect on the meaning of a consecrated life animated by the Holy Spirit and directed towards mission in the Church and in the world.

The formation journey also addressed the theme of mission as shared service and as a commitment to promote life. This reflection was guided by Fr Manuj, who invited the Sisters to consider mission as a path lived together, in co-responsibility and in the concrete witness of the Gospel.

Another significant moment focused on listening to the cry of the poor and of young people, a theme particularly dear to Canossian spirituality. The reflection was offered by Sr Dulce Magno do Santos, Provincial Superior, who encouraged the young Sisters to maintain a compassionate and attentive gaze towards the most vulnerable realities of society.

During the programme, participants also reflected on the spiritual witness of Saint Josephine Bakhita, presented as a true missionary of mercy and forgiveness. Sr Elsa da Silva’s presentation offered the Sisters the opportunity to contemplate Bakhita’s luminous testimony of faith, inner freedom, and reconciliation.

A particularly meaningful moment was the online meeting with the General Council, which allowed the Junior Sisters to feel themselves part of the wider Canossian family spread across the world, strengthening their sense of communion and belonging to the Congregation.

Alongside the formation sessions and moments of prayer, the participants also experienced a period of missionary immersion in the communities of Becora and Tibar. Encountering those most in need offered a concrete experience of the Canossian charism, which calls the Sisters to recognise in the poor those who hold a special place in the heart of God and in the heart of Saint Magdalene of Canossa.

For the Junior Sisters, this time of formation was lived with gratitude and joy. The experience strengthened their awareness of their calling and made even more evident the presence of God who accompanies and guides their vocational journey.

In this spirit, the young religious look to the future with hope, eager to continue growing in faith and service, bringing the Gospel of charity to the places where they are called to live out the Canossian mission.
