Sotouboua, Togo – In a country where access to basic services remains a daily struggle, hope is taking tangible form thanks to the commitment of the Canossian Sisters. Present in the region for many years, these religious women serve in the most remote villages, where healthcare, education, and basic living conditions are still a privilege for the few.
Togo, a small West African nation, finds itself in a politically fragile situation—outwardly stable but governed for decades by the same ruling family. Public services suffer from serious shortcomings, and poverty levels are alarmingly high. Over half the population survives on less than two euros a day. The education system is severely hampered by a lack of adequate infrastructure, qualified professionals (doctors, teachers, technicians), and financial resources.
In this context, Sotouboua—a town located in the heart of the country—mirrors many of the challenges facing rural Togo: children left alone during the day, families with no support, and young women without training or hope for the future.
Yet, a dream is beginning to come true.
Following the inauguration of a Health Center and the installation of a clean water well—an essential first step toward improving quality of life—construction began in February 2025 on the “Santa Maddalena di Canossa” Preschool. It will be a safe, welcoming, and educational space for the youngest children, and a valuable resource for young mothers in the village.
A FUTURE FOR THE LITTLE ONES
The new preschool will offer:
- A daily meal for each child, helping to combat malnutrition.
- Basic healthcare and psychological support in collaboration with families.
- Structured educational activities led by trained staff to guide children through their early years of development.
- Training programs for mothers, promoting awareness and female empowerment.
The stability and long-term vision of this project respond to an urgent need: to break the cycle of neglect and instability that plagues childhood in these regions, and to contribute—step by step—to building a stronger, more conscious community.
