Today’s Gospel is good news, especially for those who feel fragile. In the parable, the Father chooses to wait and does not settle for the son’s “no.” As in the parable of the prodigal son, the Father trusts that the son will change his heart, which is why he is moved when he sees him return.
In truth, what distinguishes the tax collectors and prostitutes from the Pharisees is that the former were not concerned with appearances: once they came to know the way of righteousness, they recognized their sin and believed in God.
Today the Lord reminds us that it is never too late to repent and come home. A “yes” that sets us on the path is worth more than an “I’m going” that never takes the first step.
“He repented and went away”. God expects us to return.
