The Agata Carelli Higher Institute (ISAC) stands at the heart of Agoè-Nyivé, a rapidly expanding suburb of Lomé. Home to more than 500,000 people from across Togo, the area has seen a growing influx of young people who settle there to pursue university studies or seek employment. This demographic shift has generated a significant demand for education and vocational training — a need that the University of Lomé can no longer meet on its own.
When concrete opportunities are lacking, many young people become vulnerable to undertaking dangerous journeys in search of a future elsewhere.
To offer real and hopeful alternatives, the Canossian Sisters — present in Lomé since 1994 with a longstanding commitment to education — founded the Agata Carelli Higher Institute, dedicated to technical and professional training. This sector is now strongly supported by the Togolese government as a strategic lever to boost youth employment, socio-economic integration, and national economic development.
ISAC provides programmes leading to the Higher Technician Diploma (A-level + 2 years) and the Professional Bachelor’s Degree (A-level + 3 years) in key fields such as accounting, secretarial studies, commerce, administration, management, human resources, communication, and development planning.
In its early years, the institute operated with only a few classrooms, several offices, and a computer room, welcoming around 200 students annually. However, to comply with the standards set by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and to expand its academic offering, a significant upgrade was required: a new administrative block, a 200-seat lecture hall, additional classrooms, and fully equipped laboratories.
Thanks to the support of the Canossian Foundation VOICA – ETS, this vision has now become reality. Eight new classrooms, a large hall, and four offices have been constructed and fully furnished — an expansion that has injected renewed vitality into the institute, which can now accommodate up to 500 young people eager to build a better future.
A few weeks ago, the inauguration of the new academic year marked a moment of great celebration. More than 200 students now have access to a modern, welcoming school, fully equipped with furniture and learning materials — a safe and inspiring place where they can study, grow, and nurture their aspirations.
**“Our heartfelt thanks to all who make projects such as this possible.
True solidarity knows no boundaries — neither of space nor of time.
A few furnishings and pieces of equipment are still needed, and with your support we hope to complete everything in time for Christmas.
You too can help safeguard the future of these young Togolese students.
