In a world marked by division and uncertainty, communities of faith continue to serve as beacons of hope. This truth was made especially clear from May 2–4, 2025, when 150 Canossian Lay Members from the Province of St. Francis Xavier in India came together in Andheri, Mumbai, for a vibrant three-day spiritual gathering. Under the theme “Pilgrims of Hope on the Path of Peace,” the event wove together deep Catholic spirituality with a dynamic, global missionary vision.

A Spiritual Assembly with a Global Outlook

Participants arrived from 13 of the 14 active units across India, bringing not only their personal faith but also a shared commitment to building peace and serving others in a world often marked by conflict. The gathering highlighted the crucial role Canossian Lay Members play in the global Catholic mission, embodying charity and solidarity in today’s world.

The event opened with a profound moment of prayer and an inspiring keynote address by outgoing president Mr. Francis Fernandes, who reflected on the vision of St. Magdalene of Canossa—a legacy of charity and service that remains powerfully relevant in today’s complex geopolitical climate. His message reaffirmed that Canossian Lay Members are called not only to personal holiness but to be builders of peace and witnesses of hope in society.

Renewing the Mission: Lay Leadership in Action

The second day focused on a deeper exploration of the Statutes of the Canossian Lay Movement, reaffirming the group’s commitment to living out Gospel values both in everyday life and in a global context. Times of sharing created intimate spaces for participants to voice both their struggles and their hopes, echoing the global Catholic Church’s call for more active and synodal participation.

A significant highlight was the democratic election of a new Provincial Council, marking a generational transition and a renewed commitment by the Canossian Lay Members of India:

  • President: Neena D’Mello
  • Vice President: Carmeline Lobo
  • Secretary: Bona Fernandes
  • Deputy Secretary: Rakesh Dushing
  • Treasurer: Santosh Pagi
  • Deputy Treasurer: Sabina Gonsalves

The evening continued with lively cultural performances, celebrating India’s rich Christian heritage by blending tradition with modern expression. In a country where faith and culture are deeply intertwined, these moments served as powerful, contemporary signs of identity and unity—especially within a broader geopolitical context.

A Pilgrimage of Faith and Identity

The final day culminated in a moving Christian pilgrimage through Mumbai, from the historic Basilica of Mount Mary to the Cathedral of the Holy Name. Around 100 participants walked together in prayer and reflection, strengthening their spiritual identity as Canossian Lay Members and renewing their missionary commitment. In a context where religious minorities often face complex challenges, such public witnesses of faith reaffirm the vitality and resilience of the Catholic community in India.

Looking Ahead: A Strengthened Canossian Family

The gathering concluded with heartfelt gratitude expressed to Sr. Audrey D’Souza, the Provincial Team, the Canossian Lay Commission, and all who contributed to the success of the event. A special thanks was extended to the outgoing council for laying a strong foundation for the future.

Coordinated by Sr. Meena Godad, FdCC, this was more than a spiritual retreat—it was a powerful reaffirmation of identity and mission. For a new generation of young Catholics in India searching for meaning and belonging, the Canossian Lay Movement offers a clear call: to be pilgrims of peace and faith, ready to meet the spiritual and social challenges of our times.

In an age where faith intersects with cultural identity and global realities, gatherings like this testify to the enduring strength and relevance of religious communities in building hope and transformation across boundaries.
