After days of eager anticipation, yesterday the bells of St. Peter’s rang out joyfully, and the sky over Rome turned white: the long-awaited smoke signal announced to the world that the Church has a new Pope. Habemus Papam—ancient words, rich in meaning, that echo through the centuries and continue to resonate in the hearts of the faithful as a sign of unity, continuity, and renewed trust.

The recently concluded Conclave was, by early accounts, a time of intense discernment and prayer. The cardinal electors, hailing from all corners of the globe, brought with them the hopes, struggles, and challenges of their local Churches. It was a profound exchange—at times intense—marked by silence, attentive listening, and a shared search for God’s will.

In this atmosphere of great responsibility, the figure of Robert Francis Prevost emerged—chosen as the 267th Successor of Peter, now called to lead the universal Church with wisdom, humility, and Gospel courage.

Of American origin, the new Pope brings with him a personal and pastoral journey that already speaks to the hearts of many. Known for his simple style and care for the poor, he has shown throughout his episcopal ministry a deep sensitivity to social justice and interreligious dialogue. His election serves as a bridge between the Church’s living memory and a renewed desire to look to the future with fresh energy.

His first words, spoken with emotion from the Loggia of Blessings, have already outlined the tone of his papacy: “Peace be with you all.” A simple gesture, perhaps—but a powerful one: the sign of a shepherd who seeks to walk with his people, to listen before speaking, to build bridges rather than walls.

As the Canossian Family, present on five continents in the service of education, evangelization, and the promotion of human dignity, we welcome this new season in the Church with gratitude and deep ecclesial spirit. His election is, for us, an invitation to renew our fidelity to the Gospel, to deepen our prayer, and to make our service among the poor and the little ones of the world even more fruitful.

We pray for the Holy Father Leo XIV, that the Holy Spirit may enlighten and sustain him every step of the way, and that the whole Church may accompany him with affection, obedience, and fraternal communion.

“Holy Father, the Canossian Family is with you. We are here, ready to continue the mission of St. Magdalene of Canossa, listening to the voice of the Gospel and serving humanity.”
