The first phase of the training journey for nine young volunteers came to a close on April 13 in Vimercate. These volunteers are now preparing to leave for two very different destinations, united by a shared spirit of solidarity: Piabetá in Brazil and Nsanama in Malawi. Though geographically distant, these places are close to the hearts of those who have chosen to serve local communities in collaboration with the Canossian Sisters and projects supported by our Foundation.
VOLUNTEER DESTINATIONS: A CLOSER LOOK AT BRAZIL AND MALAWI
Brazil, the fifth most populous country in the world, is a federal democracy with a dynamic political landscape, though marked by deep ideological divisions. Despite its status as an emerging economic power, it faces stark social inequality. Modern cities coexist with favelas and struggling rural areas. In Piabetá, located in the State of Rio de Janeiro, the population faces daily challenges such as poverty, limited education, and restricted access to healthcare. Yet the people live with great dignity, bound by a strong community culture and deep-rooted resilience.
Malawi, by contrast, is one of the poorest countries in Africa, with an economy primarily based on subsistence farming. Politically stable in recent years, it still faces chronic difficulties in health, education, and access to clean water. In Nsanama, a village in the south of the country, the population lives in precarious conditions, but with a remarkable spirit of hospitality and solidarity. The smiles of the children and the strength of the local communities often leave a lasting impression on volunteers.
THE FACES OF THIS SUMMER OF SOLIDARITY
In Piabetá, two young couples—Alberto and Chiara, Sara and Zaccaria—from the provinces of Milan and Varese will take centre stage. With strong teamwork and a desire to serve, they’ll be involved in maintenance and development projects supported by the Canossian Sisters and our Foundation. For them, this will also be a special opportunity to strengthen their bond as couples through an experience of service and shared purpose.
In Nsanama, a more diverse group will depart: six volunteers between the ages of 18 and 50, Stefania, Diletta, Benedetta, Federica, Michelangelo and Matteo united by their desire to give and to grow. Four women and two men, each bringing their own background and skills, will offer a unique blend of enthusiasm, experience, and adaptability. The intergenerational aspect of this group will be a key strength, aiming not only to provide practical support but also to build deep and lasting human connections.
AN INVITATION TO TAKE PART
To all of them, we offer our warmest best wishes. Their courage, generosity, and desire to build bridges between different worlds shine brightly in a society often marked by haste and individualism.
Following their journey will be a source of inspiration for us all. We invite you to support these initiatives with a prayer, a positive thought, or, if possible, a small concrete gesture—every contribution can make a difference.
